If you view Woody’s experience throughout the series as a metaphor for parenthood, then his actions in TS4 are an entirely appropriate evolution of his journey. TLDR: Toy Story 4 having too many characters, character arcs, themes, and ideas makes it an overindulgent mess, but am I too hard on it? Read the whole thing for more info. This movie re-opens a book, paints over old pages, and then re-closes it except now it doesn't fit back in the bookshelf. Are toys meant to be owned and loved by kids or not? So it's OK for toys to just give up on their owners? It's OK to be a lost toy as long as you get lucky and wind up in a carnival? People keep saying "this movie is an epilogue to Toy Story" but I'm sorry, an epilogue can't be feature length, and to me the ending of Toy Story 3 wrapped everything up. To me, this movie is unclear on its themes and on what it's trying to say overall. even though their character arc isn't even really completed (they want to get a kid, and never do).Īnd yet, so many fans love it, so I wonder if I'm being too hard on this movie. ![]() They were a good addition to the Toy Story cast, and earned their right to be in the film. Add in the completely unnecessary Officer Dimples and Duke Kaboom (the latter of which has a cliched "believe in yourself" arc as well), Buzz acting like an idiot for seemingly no reason (his "inner voice" thing makes no sense) the other toys being sidelined, and that moronic climax with the RV and the end result is just a mess. ![]() There is so much going on in this movie and to me everything in it collides together by the second act and it never recovers from there on. She just dumps him, and he gives up on her. I mean, yeah, he's Bonnie toy and he needs to be protected, but that just makes him a plot device, and why the hell does Bonnie not like Woody anymore? There's no explanation given. Then, it's Gabby Gabby's! By the end of the movie, Forky, the new main character, amounts to little and it's just. It's so difficult for me to figure out which toy I'm supposed to care about the most in this movie. To me, Toy Story 4's biggest flaw is that it has way too many characters, and the main ones are all undergoing confusing and even contradictory arcs all at once. It's probably the best-reviewed movie I dislike, with a monstrous 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an average score of 8.4/10. I've watched it three times and honestly, on my third time I felt like turning the DVD off so many times.
